Things That Bring Joy to MY Heart

Image
I was in a line of traffic today, waiting for a green light. To my left was a big truck  (Ford, Toyota, Ram?) with a decal like this on the door. I opened my window and beeped.  The woman who was driving the truck looked over and opened her window.  I called out and yelled "Women Owned Business" and gave her a thumbs up.  She grinned from ear to ear. Her business was "Power Washing"  for decks, driveways etc. Sadly I did not have time to note the name of her business. Search engines have not helped me to find her. They are dominated by the "Ten best This and That" etc. postings.   Maybe I'll see her truck again one day. ========================================= Oh how I like Puffed Wheat. It seems that it is no longer made by out- fits such as Quaker.  Glory be - I found these at a newly opened SUPER BRAVO (Hispanic themed) Supermarket in my neighborhood. I like the Super Bravo Market.    I hope that I will like their Puffed Wheat.

What We See, and What It Is

Every time I see one of these vans I think that it says Pie Baker. Reminds me of the business opposite Trader Joes on the south trail in Sarasota,  (it's no longer there).  It read OXYGEN and CPAP . Many of us couldn't help but to see   OXYGEN and CRAP.

My dear friend Steve C lives in Atlanta, GA with his partner Rick F. I've known Steve since 1976/77.  His mother Ruth C; and his grandmother Annie S. were parishioners at a parish I served in Fitchburg, MA Steve and I have stayed in touch over the years.  It's been a joy to have extended that friendship since I met Rick. Their tender and thoughtful care arrived in a parcel today.  Get this! A gorgeous cushion emblazoned with pictures of Z .  Cause for tears of course; chiefly because of the gracious and thoughtful care of  Steve and Rick. A Blessing!  As the bible puts it:  "Weeping may spend the night; but joy comes in the morning."

Who Is She?

Every now and then I get junk mail for one "Whitney Povey". The photo' is of the most recent.  In the past Whitney has also been offered a modeling career; and a college application. There are no Whitney Poveys in my extended family. No such person has lived at my address. I do not have a secret daughter with this name - of that I am 100% certain. I am not descended from Eli Whitney. I have never owned Pratt and Whitney shares. Go figure!   Once you are on a junk mail list you will forever be on such a list.  Such is the efficiency of big business and mailing lists. I am tempted to sign up for a Discover Student Card in Whitney's name, but that would complicate matters!

Zion the stately. I can now look at his photo's without opening the floodgates, but my eyes still moisten.

I like these

Image
An Irish favourite which beguiled people in the north west of England (perhaps via the many Irish immigrants in Liverpool). We snooty English southerners thought of eating Fish and Chips with a side of Mushies to be a strange northern custom. We didn't like them because we'd never tried them. In an adventurous mood I bought some in the international foods section of a local supermarket. I like them!  They are sweet, and make a grand side dish with (say) eggs and bacon' or a good pork chop. Come to think of it they are very much like the canned marrow fat  peas which Mum used to buy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marrowfat_peas

I Love To Be Silly

In a 7/11 the other day the clerk asked if I had a ('phone) number with them.  (Required for a somewhat dubious "rewards" scheme). I replied with "My Daddy and Mummy won't let me have a 'phone" -  laughter all round! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Friday 16th Feb I had a good visit at Life Care with a neighbour who is receiving rehab treatment. As I walked out I greeted a nurse who was at his station. He asked "are you a patient or a visitor?" Across the way I spotted a physical therapist who has seen me many times. I called out to him saying "I am having memory problems, am I patient or a visitor?" Guffaws all around.  Someone said "that was a good one" On line giggles O.K?

Sarasota Orchestra at 75 15th February 2024

What a gorgeous evening at the Orchestra's 75th Anniversary Concert.  I needed this. Just 90 minutes of soul food -  a brief concert, since it was to be followed by a Gala Reception (which I didn't attend). Copland - so well known. Over before it's started!  (Look up the great history of this work.) Joan Tower  - a total showcase and feast for percussion.  No chance of nodding off in this exciting work. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08yn580 Rachmaninoff   -   Not for the timid pianist!  The work which aspiring concert pianists long to master.  Glory at the hands of the great Garrick Ohlsson -  with luscious portions from the strings. See below for Ohlsson's fabulous encore. Gershwin  -  it hardly gets better than this.   Listen for the horns of the Paris Fiacres! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The encore.  So beautiful as to bring tears to many eyes.  Here it is by Ohlsson at ano

Of Course I Still Get Teary Eyes - BUT

Image
Oh you dear sweet Zion.  I cannot think of you without eyes filled with tears.  You gave me and so many others so much deep love. BUT  - here is a compliment to who you were. ON Saturday night I was with our friends Ashley and Donna.  They adored you. As I left their home I noted two dogs and two owners across the street. One of the dogs was an English Cream Retriever; (a branch of the Golden Family).  He/she was gorgeous.    I crossed the street to tickle his/her ears. I had no other choice. To make a fuss of this gorgeous dog was my grateful compliment to my dearest Zi.                      Stock photo' English Cream Retriever

The Key (life under stress)

Image
I live a very quiet life at home.  No T.V; no Radio. No noise,  save for the gentle ticking and lovely chiming of my forty year old Ridgeway mantle clock. It had been silent for many years.  I thought that it was not repairable.  But Sarasota's "Clock Gallery" came to the rescue. They restored the clock to its fine time keeping and lovely sounds. All well and good until this morning.  Despite hunting high and low I could not find the key (which I had used just a few days ago). It must be somewhere. No big deal eh?  But under my current stress it felt like the universe was malevolent and had decided to silence my friend. A fifteen minute drive and a $16.50 expense I drove to the Clock Gallery, (arriving soon after they opened for business) and bought a new key. O Lucky Man! (I have a choice of three chimes (or silence).  I favour the St. Michael's chimes from the Church of that name in Charleston, S. Carolina where my great mentor, the Revd. DeWolf Perry,  had once bee

Picky. picky.

My dear friends R and C have moved back to Sarasota after a brief sojourn in St. Petersburg, FL They formerly lived in the Gulf Gate area which is in Sarasota County; but not within the City of Sarasota.    Now they live in the City proper where the rules and regs are different. (How is this possible?:  As the City expanded either it could not; or it would not incorporate the new areas). It's all very confusing.  For example, my drive to Arlington Park begins in the City; then it's in the County; then it's in the City again. It's a possibility that your home is within in the City, but your neighbour's home is in the County. I'm helping R and C to navigate some City of Sarasota regs re waste. Within the City we have single stream recycling. (Maybe in the County too) There is a powerful encouragement to recycle glass, tin cans, certain plastics, paper etc. when the City not the individual does the sorting. (This begs the question about the efficacy of recycling.

Today: Up and Running Again

Image
I decided t wo days ago to update my Opera Web Browser.  Oh dear.  I lost  everything.  The gods of the internet decided that Microsoft Edge would be my browser. I'd thought to use the services of the Geek Squad.  Then as I needed a full day of work, I reset all my important  sites to Edge. Financial sites; Facebook; More Prattle from Povey; Google Calendar; &c &c &c Twarn't easy.  If you lived near me you'd have heard a host of loud bad language such as "Oh dearie me", or "I'll be jiggered"! Resetting passwords; getting confirmation codes on my mobile 'phone.  Messing up and succeeding.   Sheer tedium.  Such success! Ho Ho Ho. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And this is good.   I am now walking every day. 'Tis good for my physical health.   'Tis even better for my soul.  I walk where dearest Zion walked, so that I can rejoice; as I remember the love which he so freely gave.   W

I am so sorry about Zion. Oh my goodness. What a sad day and heartbreaking moment. Zion was such a gift from the heavens. His holy work was limitless. I can see him sitting at the side of the Holy One philosophizing of the similarity of God and doG. I am glad I knew him. May you find comfort in all his mitzvot and your care for him. Big hugs, Michael  Shefrin                                                                                                  Rabbi Michael  Shefrin;  Temple Emmanu-el, Sarasota    Certificate Zion received at last year's Temple Emmanu-el blessing of the animals.
