Sarasota Orchestra at 75 15th February 2024

What a gorgeous evening at the Orchestra's 75th Anniversary Concert.  I needed this.

Just 90 minutes of soul food -  a brief concert, since it was to be followed by a Gala Reception (which I didn't attend).

Copland - so well known. Over before it's started!  (Look up the great history of this work.)

Joan Tower - a total showcase and feast for percussion.  No chance of nodding off in this exciting work.

Rachmaninoff  -   Not for the timid pianist!  The work which aspiring concert pianists long to master.  Glory at the hands of the great Garrick Ohlsson -  with luscious portions from the strings.

See below for Ohlsson's fabulous encore.

Gershwin -  it hardly gets better than this.   Listen for the horns of the Paris Fiacres!

The encore.  So beautiful as to bring tears to many eyes.  Here it is by Ohlsson at another concert

Some bragging from me.  I am a member of the S.O's Fermata Society; a reward for my modest monthly contribution.  I get invitations for special events -  such as the open rehearsal I attended last year.

But my name in the programme?  A first for me!
