Picky. picky.

My dear friends R and C have moved back to Sarasota after a brief sojourn in St. Petersburg, FL

They formerly lived in the Gulf Gate area which is in Sarasota County; but not within the City of Sarasota.

Now they live in the City proper where the rules and regs are different.

(How is this possible?:  As the City expanded either it could not; or it would not incorporate the new areas).

It's all very confusing.  For example, my drive to Arlington Park begins in the City; then it's in the County; then it's in the City again.

It's a possibility that your home is within in the City, but your neighbour's home is in the County.

I'm helping R and C to navigate some City of Sarasota regs re waste.

Within the City we have single stream recycling. (Maybe in the County too)

There is a powerful encouragement to recycle glass, tin cans, certain plastics, paper etc. when the City not the individual does the sorting.

(This begs the question about the efficacy of recycling.  How much is recycled; how much ends in a landfill?)

Then there is "common or garden" trash; destined for the landfill.  The City provides us with these bins.

R,C and I noted that "Garbage' is a misnomer. Strictly speaking it references leftover foodstuffs.

This takes me back to WWII and immediate post WWII garbage processing in the U.K.  Nothing was wasted.  Leftover food scraps were placed in what we called "pig bins", and collected once a week.

The exigencies of WWII  and the following years in the U.K.  meant that nothing was wasted.

Garbage was collected, purified, formed into cakes; and then shipped out to farmers for them to feed to their free range pigs.

"Last month's garbage becomes next month's bacon eh?"

Not in my ever-growing family where any leftover grub was fed to our cat "Tiger".
