Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

A shoe horn. An object unknown to youngsters.

Image
I It's resting on my desk for a photo' op, but for many years its' home was on my hall table, underneath which is a shoe rack.  Then the shoehorn went Awol I found it today in, of  all places, the cutlery/silverware in the dining room What?  Dear friends please remember that the daughter and mother who clean my home are not only cleaners but also obsessive tidiers.   They tidy so much that articles go AWOL.  In this case a silvery object clearly had no place on the hall table. In this case a silvery shoe horn clearly belonged with other shiny silvery objects.  In the cutlery drawer of course! l

Healing can be reached. But not "yesterday"

It was on August 19th that I spent time at the local hospital's WOUND CLINIC. with my surgeon Dr LIWSKI and an R.N. One thing was clear. The Doctor and Nurse minced not words.  "You cannot allow the dressing around your toe to get damp"  A wet dressing is a petrie dish for further infection. The surgeon issued orders for continued home visits  I postponed the first of such visits, by an occupational therapist. on account of the severe and tempestuous  movements of my bowels.  It had been slated for Friday 21st (morning)  The cancellation was fortuitous,   The doorbell rang at 1:00 p.m. It was the R.N. making her weekly visit.  Surprise!  I had failed to see or read a voice mail in which she'd alerted me to her visit. NEVER MIND   She scolded me for wearing dirty socks!  She carefully cleaned and rebound the wound. She gave me instructions for continued care. She was with me for forty minutes.   This is almo...

Some twelve years ago David the Naster Handy Man  (now retired) asked if he should install grab bars when he was fitting a new shower hose.  I'm glad that I said yes When my neighbour died  (8/10 years ago) her Detroit brother asked if I could use her super walker,  I didn't then.   I do  now!

Hooray for Everence Credit Union

Image
Everence Credit Union, Sarasota Branch Formerly Mennonite Financial Services.  -- "Everence" signifying permanence and reverence. Most Everence branches are in the Mennonite heartlands    The Sarasota Branch is a geographical outlier.  I have some accounts with Everence.  (new customers sign a document about the stewardship of money and wealth). A week or so ago there was an attempt at fraud using my debit card info.  The attempt was at a Wal-Mart in New Jersey.  Surely I deserved a Saks Fifth Avenue ! My card was frozen,  A replacement arrived yesterday   Try as I could the phone # given to reactivate my account would not work.  The Branch Manager  (Kara Hochstetler) was as baffled as I. But with care and patience; expertise, experience, and knowledge  (and a bit of good luck) she had my card up and running again.  It took more than 25 mins. Kara's boss is one Caitlyn Laubach =  she is based in PA. I made ...

Corrected by Ruth M Card // Corrected by MaryLou Lavallee

Back in 1976/7 my friend Ruth used the word NORMALCY I protested that there was no such word.  Ruth, quick off the mark, consulted her American Dictionary.  Her  word was there.  We Brits prefer NORMALITY  Some years later whilst in conversation with Mary Lou Lavallee I used the British word "disorientated"  ,"No, no, no" she said "the word is " disoriented " Normality  left my life in the days/weeks when I was in the hospital and the clinic.  I was utterly disoriented.   I was lost.  I have lost some memories for ever. More tomorrow   It ain't all good.  I weren't all good

I treated myself

Image
My eyes begin to dim    I treated myself to new "spectacles". A bold watch face, plus a showing of day and date. Essential for we "old failing memory farts".  A quick glance at the left or right wrist is so much simpler than searching for a handheld device.

Lost and Found at the Hospital FOUND

No Victorian Underwear  No Holy Socks An undershirt; a computer cable; a scrap of paper with notes on it;  a much needed belt. It's a wonder that it was retrievable.

NOT SKECHERS but clothes lost in the hospital

Image
Four hospital rooms in two weeks.   Being moved from room to room is not good for the soul.  It is very bad for the soul.  It disorientates the mind.  Rooms with all white walls are also dangerous. I lost more than half of my personal  hospital clothing in the moves: tee shirts, underwear, walking shorts Ah well, put him in a Johnnie, that'll do.   The crowning blow was when one martinet threw away my old clothes and bag,  (saving only my iPhone charger) What I lost on the swings I gained on the roundabout. When I was in the surgical recovery a nurse handed me a boot, saying "put this on".  Then she disappeared, leaving no instruction as to use.  The boot followed me home. I prefer Skechers! Never mind,   The home based visiting therapist will find good use for it, 'specially because my  right leg is  horribly swollen with edema,

I've joined the SHECKERS world. I like it

Merry Go Round Home, Hospital, Clinic, Home. Confusion

Image
The saga started at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital's Wound Clinic.  A small lesion on my right leg was healing well;  but the big toe was wildly inflamed and infected. Thus followed surgery for that; with a bonus -  the long overdue insertion of a stent from my heart  to my right leg.   On one of my furloughs I was sent home bearing a Jackson-Pratt drainage machine with instructions for its use. Grrh   a plastic tube broke loose as I slept,  causing a flood in my sleep wear etc.   Fortunately that was the day for a nurse to be at my home. Back at the Hospital I was not a particularly good boy.  When given the choice between going home or having therapy I always chose to go home. On one occasion I chose home.   No sooner had I been there I fell into a sense of deep loneliness. I went back to the hospital where I had to be treated as a new patient.   I had allowed my stubborn will to override my good sen...

Things are going well-ish.

Mr Cooper and I were able spend times today (morning and  afternoon  at the 17th St Dog Park.  My short walks were useful in the healing journey.  Cooper ran amuck as I rested.  Good for Coop and good for me   BUT NOT GREAT I  had a wrangle with my therapy clinic.   The clinic placed me in a (sporadic and irregular ) program  for frequent fallers.  I am not such.   I need a progamme for daily steps t'ward full recovery. in a broad scope    We'll find one soon! jmp
