Rudyard Kipling Giving your heart for a Dog to Tear ON THE DEATH OF A DOG

Image
T here is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we a lways arrange for more? Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear. Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie— Perfect passion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart for a dog to tear. When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will find—it’s your own affair— But … you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear. When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!). When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gone—wherever it goes—for good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear. We’ve sorrow enough in the n...

If You Lived in Central Massachusetts there is One Word Which Will Evoke a Host of Memories

At the dog park this afternoon I met a man who once lived in the Worcester MA area. I asked, "Do You Remember SPAGS?"  This took him into memory land. "SPAGS NO BAGS" UNFORGETTABLE! Spag's - Wikipedia

GOOD DAY

Image
Since I am no longer a British Citizen, I've had to obtain a permit to enter the U.K. Such permits are obtained via a smart 'phone.  My friend Bill came to my home today to help me obtain the permit. It was a tedious and difficult process.  Bill and I succeeded as we worked together. I had a thank you gift for Bill  (just one bottle!) He got the humour! --------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a fairly new Epson Printer/Scanner/Copier etc It's been a source of frustration. I could not get it to work. In a time of patience I dug deep to rectify the issue. 'Twas simple. via the Control Panel I found that my default printer was not Epson but one which bit the dust some time ago. I changed the settings.  VOILA!  now my Epson works like a charm!   Oh what I was able to accomplish on a not busy day.

Oh Yes!

Who Are You?

Image
I remember you telling me of your plans for a holiday on the canals of Holland, and on the Rhine River. You sent me a postcard with a lovely and detailed message about your adventure.  You signed it with initials.   Now for the life of me I cannot put the name(s) to the initials.   s Believe me I was tickled pink to get the card, especially with a message which was much more than "having a good time, the weather is good!" I'll be more than tickled pink I'll be red faced when a light shines in my dull brain, or you fess up as to your identity. "Of course it was him/her/them"  will be my reaction " how could I have been   so forgetful? Thank you!

I am not a great fan of Ice Cream.    Maybe it's because post WWII Ice Cream in the U.K. was not great. One of the brands was "Wall's"    It was like eating frozen butter. Every now and then I purchase ice cream in these United States. It has to   be high-quality French Vanilla. No fancy flavours please! I let it melt, then drink it in a mug, with added honey. I recommend ice cream in a mug!

GOOD? FRIDAY

Historically a day of terror for Jews, the alleged "Christ Killers" That's why I despise the public "Stations of the Cross". https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/stations-of-the-cross-pilgrimage-observed-for-24th-year-on-good-friday-in-sarasota/ar-AA1CPiEM?ocid=BingNewsVerp

Zion's Tree

Image
We planted Zion's (Jacaranda) tree in June 2024.  At one time it seemed to be on the point of death.   My  neighbour Helen has a green thumb.  She has taken on the project of reviving the tree. Her tlc is working.

April 20th 2025 is?

Image
My run of the mill wall calendar gets it right! April 20th 2025 is Easter, (or Easter Day) NOT Easter Sunday. The initial great celebration of the resurrection is of necessity on a Sunday - rightly called Easter (or Easter Day) The celebration of the resurrection continues for Fifty days.  Thus there are other Sundays in Easter. Is it too late to change your bulletins and publicity?  Probably and regretfully so. The Revd. J. Michael Persnickety.

A Legacy Restored

Image
My  Great Aunt Maud Ames left Bristol in 1944/45 soon after her sister, our maternal Grandmother Kate (Ames) died     Maud disappeared from family view - painfully  for our Mum, her niece.   Even though Great Aunt Ada (Maud's sister) knew of her whereabouts but would not disclose it to Mum.   Mum, in one of her mystical moments, thought she remembered an address in Alum Rock, Birmingham.   She persuaded her brothers Wally, Fred, and maybe Harold to drive to that address.   I thought that it was a fool's errand.   Amazingly they encountered one of Maud's former neighbours.  She gave them an address near the old and small Birmingham Airport.  By then she'd been married but  was widowed from Cecil Spencer  (I have a vague memory that he was known as Bill)   So it was that Maud re-entered our lives.  She was simple in the best sense. We loved her dearly. She visited us often     I would visit Maud...

Hoarding before prices rocket

Biscuits are one of my treats, not staples. I'm hoarding Belvita Brand. from an American manufacturer. The cost of raw materials is likely to rise. Biscoff is the famous Belgian Biscuit.  I first encountered them on the old Air Tran airline, (eventually taken over by South West).  Darn they are good.   Will they be subject to American Tariffs?

Aargh Oak Allergy

Image
It started on Sunday night.    As I tried to sleep my face was burning hot and my body was itchy all over.    I thought that it had to do with the Fluorouracil cream which my dermatological physician yet wants me to apply.  I got up three times to wash my face with antibiotic soap  - but got no relief. On Monday my eyes were so runny that I could hardly read the computer screen and had to set it to the largest print. On Tuesday afternoon we were at the dog park and I could hardly see. As I drove home a light shone into my dim brain. It said "Allergies".  Maybe I am having an allergic reaction to the Oak tow? Off I went to the Pharmacy to get this It gave me a lot of relief through Tuesday night and I slept well. Nevertheless I must have rubbed my left eye even as I slept. It's not a photo' I would use on a C.V! I'm delaying in making an appointment with an allergy Doctor since I will be seeing my dermatological surgeon  on Thursday a.m ....
