More School Daze (and a Slap In The Face)
Fairfield Grammar School (my school 1955-60) held an annual event to raise money for UNICEF. I think that it was spear headed by Mr, Hunneman and/or Mr. Gilkes.
The event helped we students to understand more about the big wide world and the desperate straights of many children. (It's worse than ever now, but we did our best then.)
It was a good time for parents and family members to see the inside of the school and to meet our teachers in an informal setting.

School life was more than sweetness and light.
I remember the infamous slap in the face.
Mr. Maggs was doing duty as the school lunch monitor; saying grace and keeping order.
On day he was having an altercation with a rebellious boy - a Sixth Former I think.
The stood facing each other. Their argument was boisterous. It ended when Mr. Maggs (red hot with anger) slapped the boy across the face. A hush of wonderment filled the room!
We never heard whether or not Mr. Maggs got a severe wigging from the Head Master. In these days Mr. Maggs would be up before the Beak.

Speaking of School meals ( I' d rather not!) we ate at tables in one of the two halls - I think the lower of the two.
I believe they were cooked off premises. They were BAD!
I couldn't stomach the chocolate puddings or custards which were served for "afters". I still despise chocolate ice-cream, cake, chip cookies - even brownies! ***
Even worse was Spam (and maybe canned Corned Beef slices) cooked in batter. My stomach churns as I think about it.
I gave up on School Cuisine and would take a sandwich from home.

On my first Sunday in my first Parish (The Church of the Good Shepherd, Fitchburg MA) I was honoured with a special Coffee Hour. Linda D provided her notable Chocolate Cake. I braved up and ate it with a stiff upper lip!
